Announcing: Memento Mori exhibition at The Parlor
Memento mori
November 18 - December 17, 2022
The Parlor, 108 West North Avenue
Memento mori (Latin for 'remember that you [have to] die’) acknowledges and celebrates the history of 108 West North Avenue with an exhibition marking its transition from a place for the dead and grieving for more than 100 years to a space for art and artists. Featuring 50 works from a dozen artists, Momento Mori marks a significant transition in the life of the building, a late 19th century rowhome that from 1914 until recently served the community as a funeral home. In the future, under the the ownership of Timshel Development, the building will provide space for art and artists in the Station North Arts District as well as a speakeasy bar and restaurant.
Many religions and cultures honor the dead in November, and Memento mori follows suit with its dedication to lives lost in Baltimore and the loved ones left behind as we enter the holiday season.
With an exhibition and performances that taps the liminality of the setting and the profound experience of loss and remembrance, Memento mori also offers healing and a reminder to live in the moment. The exhibition pays homage to the building’s past and the lives celebrated within its walls.
The exhibition opens on November 18 and will run through December 17, with remarks and a live performance by Michele Blu starting at 6:30 on November 18, and the pop-up speakeasy “The Afterlife”, designed by No Land Beyond, featuring beverages crafted by mixologist Ciara Newton will be open from 5-8 pm on November 18, December 10, and December 17.
Additional events include a tour of the exhibition with some of the artists and curator Catherine Borg on December 10 at noon. Also on December 10 at 6:30 pm is the sound and projection performance Dada Morte by Carrie Fucile and Brenton Lim. On December 17, Konjur Collective featuring musicians Bashi Rose, Jamal Moore, and King Solomon perform two different 30-minute sets at 6:30 and 7:30 to close out Memento mori.
